THROUGH THE FIRE: The Meaning of Life

By SHARON YAMAMOTO (published in The Rafu Shimpo on May 4, 2011)

Whenever I have a little time on my hands with no pressing deadlines or immediate goals, I turn into a restless slug. I lie in bed much longer than I should be lying in bed. It takes all the energy I can muster to get up and brush my teeth. I spend way too much time thinking about what I’m going to be eating next. I resort to watching crap programs on TV (yes, I’m sorry to admit I’m back with “Dancing with the Stars,” even though I gave it up last season because of that awful Bristol Palin).

Lately, I’ve also resorted to regularly checking the news feed on my Facebook page, living vicariously through the exploits and daily wanderings of all my friends, convinced that their lives are way much more interesting than mine.

Dark Christmas by Ted Tajima

Christmas of ’73?  Sure, I remember it, but not very well.  That’s about 50 years ago and I don’t recall too much too well.  But I remember that Christmas because it was our first dark one.

Maybe I recall it at all because I remember better how Christmas was before ’73.  Those were some Christmases, let me tell you.

Those were the days when people observed Christmas as the birth date of Christ Jesus, but they observed it in some mighty fancy ways.

Elaine drove one of her BMW SUVs and we motored to Arroyo Grande. It was about a four hour drive. Because it was a weekend, the traffic up 101 was not heavy. The weather was beautiful, not too warm and not cloudy.

In Arroyo Grande we turned off 101, and drove through the old town and into the hills. The entrance to Elaine’s and Kathie’s and Tom’s acreage now has a large sign, “Barking Dog Ranch.” Tom probably master-minded the construction of the sign, which stands about 15′ tall. I don’t know who did the letters but they were easy to read.

Thanks to Elaine’s driving her Lexus hybrid SUV, I was able to take a present to Scott and Corey Sims on the birth of their baby, Sophia Jean. The drive from Elaine’s home in Santa Monica was to Carlsbad, then to Sumi’s rest home in San Diego, then back to Elaine’s. I’m sure the total miles was 350-400 miles. Elaine drove it all.

At Scott’s, the baby was one month and one day old. She is a beautiful baby and she should be–she has a beautiful heritage. Scott and Corey fixed up a baby’s room, right where the steps come to the second floor landing. A closet about half of one wall wide was full of clothes for her. I doubt that she will be able to wear them all.

It was good to see them happy. I got to carry Sophia for a half-hour or so. It was a bit shaky. I would be old enough at 87 to be Sophia’s great grandfather.
